words

I came across an interesting word while reading, “What is a “nation”?” It was Ontological. I looked said word up and found this. That ontology originated from the Greek. It is a philosophical study of the nature of being, existence or reality in general. According to the web it was traditionally listed as a part of the major branch of philosophy known as metaphysics. Ontology deals with questions concerning thatentities exist or can be said to exist, and how such entities can be grouped, related within a hierarchy and subdivided according to similarities and differences.

  1. Ontology is a great word and you can spend a lot of time researching it. Generally, yes, "ontological" inquiry looks at the nature of existence and asks "What can exist?". It is interesting to compare this to epistemological inquiry which is primarily concerned with the nature and scope of knowledge, and whether knowledge is possible. This is deep stuff!
