Chronicle of a Summer

An anthropology/ethnography of their own city and its inhabitants, Jean Rouch and Egdar Morin's Chronique d'un été: Paris 1960 is considered one of the earliest and most important examples of cinéma vérité which combines "naturalistic" documentary techniques with stylized cinematic devices of editing and camerawork, staged set-ups, and the use of the camera to provoke subjects. Chronique d'un été, like many cinéma vérité, also takes a provocative stance toward its topics with the directors (who often appear in the film) directly challenging the films participants. Below is a clip where a group discusses the complex and challenging question of race relations in France.
